São Paulo and Rain

Dear Rain:

How are you in this grey but rainless day? Taking a bit of a break, are you? I heard a lot about you in the news - you worked hard.

In the afternoon, you only manage 4 km of traffic jam, but I think the chaos you caused in the morning was enough to make you happy for the whole week. Oh, but knowing you of course you are going to keep on making the best effort to stop the city, right?

Cars that turned into boats and trucks that turned into ships must be your biggest pride. It's not everywhere that we can see amphibious vehicles going around -- such innovation. You must love it.

I also heard that you did some pretty crazy work in a favela in Santana do Parnaíba, transforming the houses in slip-slides... Four children died, though, did you know that? Oh, I see, collateral damage for your adventures? Don't you care for the parents' pain?

I know you were here before us and nothing was wrong until we made the place water proof, but people need to go places in their cars, what can we do?

What? You don't like the work they are doing at marginal ? But they have to build 3 extra lanes so the traffic jams can stop happening... even if it's only going to work until 2013. And only if you are not around, because with the river overflowing, the extra space will not help much.

Can't you just give us a break?

I see, you are not going to stop falling in São Paulo, no matter how nicely we ask.

You know what? We are not stopping either, did you know that? You got here first, but we are many! We have cars and trucks and factories and we want to stay in the city! We want to drive our cars. We want to go shopping in our cars.

And don't you dare telling us to take the metro! Are you crazy? We hate feeling like we are sardines in the train. We want to drive alone, burn as much gas and pave as much land as we want. You are not going to stop us -- just try it!

Until you can rain so hard that you flood the whole city and drown all of us, we will not stop! We have rights! We have the right to destroy this ecosystem, as we did, and you cannot do anything about it.
